Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States Congregationalism has always inclined to publication, and the number of works really germane to the history of the denomination is enormous and constantly increasing. The connection of the body with the settlement of New England and the opening up of the West has led to some treatment of the features of this story by almost every writer on the beginnings of the northern United States, and the intimacy which marked the relationship of the Congregational churches to the civil governments during much of their American life renders town and colonial histories, legislative records, and even personal journals scarcely less sources of religious than of secular history. Fortunately for the student of Congregationalism, a bibliography of works in any way related to the theme was prepared by the late Rev. Dr. Henry M.Dexter, and published in his "Congregationalism of the last Three Hundred Years" (New York, Harper Brothers, 1880). This magnificent list, the result of years of investigation, extends from 1546 to 1879, and embraces 7250 titles. Yet even this is not exhaustive, and a complete bibliography, brought down to 1894, would probably include at least 8000 works which might justly be claimed to illustrate the story of Congregationalism more or less directly. The present writer, in his "Creeds and Platforms of Congregationalism" (New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1893), has given extended bibliographies of the leading Congregational symbols and of the discussions out of which they have grown. No one library includes all Congregational literature; but the student will find large collections in the possession of the Congregational Library at Boston, of Yale University (Dr. Dexter's own library), of the Massachusetts Historical Society or of the Public Library (Prince Library) at Boston, and of the American Antiquarian Society at Worcester. Smaller collections of value are those of the Connecticut Historical Society at Hartford, of Andover Theological Seminary, and of Union Theological Seminary. The following list is presented merely as suggestive of works of special importance for Congregational History. Declarations On Faith And Polity. A True Description out of the Word of God, of the Visible Church. [Dort], 1589. (The first Declaration of the London-Amsterdam Church.) A True Confession of the Faith, and Humble Acknowledgment be the Alegeance, which wee hir Maiesties Subjects, falsely called Brownists, doo hould tcnn ards God, and yeild to hir Majestie and all other that are over us in the Lord. [Amsterdam], 1596. (The second Declaration of the London-Amsterdam Church.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Supplement to the History and Genealogy of the Davenport Family: In England and America, From A. D. 1086 to 1850 It is now twenty-five years since a History and Genealogy of the Davenport Family was published by the undersigned. But few works of the kind had, at that period, been undertaken. Since then they have been greatly multiplied, and their importance generally recognized as tending to illustrate the history of the first colonies of our country, and in perpetuating the early record of the prominent families who were engaged in those settlements. As there have been numerous shoots, and offshoots, of our Family Tree, for the past-quarter of a century, it is now proposed to print a Supplement to the volume then issued, repeating, briefly, the record of the past generations, and bringing down the lines of descent to the present time; with such corrections and additions as have come to the hands of the writer, or which he may have been able to gather. The History of Lothian Road United Free Church Congregation Classic Reprint

Author: United Free Church of Scotland Session
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 1334712034
Release Date: 2016-12-23
Genre: Reference

Excerpt from The History of Lothian Road United Free Church Congregation This history is divided into the periods covered by the several ministers of the congregation, and separate chapters deal with different branches of the church work. Overlapping in such circumstances can scarcely be avoided, but an endeavour has been made to reduce it to a minimum. Reference may particularly be made to the lengthened controversy over the introduction of unfermented wine, which might appropriately have found a place under several headings, such as in the chapter relating to Mr Aitken's ministry, or in the chapter recording the progress of Temperance Work in the congregation. It will be found in the chapter dealing with Mr Fleming's ministry, during which period the agitation commenced. Calvinists Incorporated

Author: Anne Kelly Knowles
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226448533
Release Date: 1997-02
Genre: History

Bringing immigrants onstage as central players in the drama of rural capitalist transformation, Anne Kelly Knowles traces a community of Welsh immigrants to Jackson and Gallia counties in southern Ohio. After reconstructing the gradual process of community-building, Knowles focuses on the pivotal moment when the immigrants became involved with the industrialization of their new region as workers and investors in Welsh-owned charcoal iron companies. Setting the southern Ohio Welsh in the context of Welsh immigration as a whole from 1795 to 1850, Knowles explores how these strict Calvinists responded to the moral dilemmas posed by leaving their native land and experiencing economic success in the United States. Knowles draws on a wide variety of sources, including obituaries and community histories, to reconstruct the personal histories of over 1,700 immigrants. The resulting account will find appreciative readers not only among historical geographers, but also among American economic historians and historians of religion.

Congregational Church Music

Author: Leonard Woolsey Bacon
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 0483874108
Release Date: 2019-02
Genre:

Excerpt from Congregational Church-Music: With 150 Psalms and Hymns From the Collection of the General Association of Connecticut This collection contains a large number - perhaps almost the $110l those familiar psalms and hymns which are commonly used in a congregation to express an act of united worship. They are printed thus, in a separate form, not with a view of superseding, in any measure, the book from which they are taken, but rather of guiding and assisting in the use of it. The tunes have been selected, not for their intrinsic merit or fitness for congregational use, but because they are the tunes which are actually known, and which are constantly used by the Churches at social meetings, and wherever else the services of a trained choir are dispensed with. Care has been taken not to separate any psalm or hymn from a tune with which it has become associated by It is hoped, on the contrary, that this book will be useful in confirming and establishing such associations. The compiler is under large obligations to composers and proprietors of copyright tunes for favors which are properly acknowledged in the course of the book.
