Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States The great teachers of the medieval church had uniformly held that the Bible is the ultimate source of religious au thority. But it was not the Bible interpreted by the in dividual. No thought fundamental to the Roman Empire had been more impressed on the minds of men than that of visible, external unity-a unity finding expression in a uniform system of government, a uniform body of law, and a visible, earthly head. This great Roman imperial con ception had produced the medieval papacy; it produced also in the political world the far less efficient, but no less assertive, Holy Roman Empire. For such a body, char acterized by such external marks of unity, an authorita tive exposition of that which it claimed as its fundamental law, the Bible, was imperatively necessary. That expo sitiou was believed to be set forth by the church itself, speaking through tradition, the consensus of its fathers and doctors, the decrees of its popes, and especially through general councils. All these made a mass of authority which, though professedly subordinate to the Word of God and merely interpretative of it, really, if not theoret ically, put it in the background; and substituted for a direct appeal to its prescriptions, a mass of exposition, the slow growth of centuries, which buttressed an elaborate sys tem of doctrine, polity, and ceremonial. Itself the result of gradual accretion through nearly a millennium and a half of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Future of Presbyterianism in the United States Classic Reprint

Author: Charles A. Briggs
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 133443915X
Release Date: 2018-02-28
Genre: Political Science

Excerpt from The Future of Presbyterianism in the United States All American churches are in the stream of that tendency which is rushing on towards the unity of Christ's Church. The hedges which separate the denominations are traditional theories and practices; but they are no longer realities to thinking and working men and women. The liberals of every denomination of Christians are more in accord with one another than they are with the conservatives in their own denominations. The problem in the near future is this: Can the liberals remain in comfort in their several denominations and so become the bridges of Church Unity or will they be forced to unite in a comprehensive frame of Church Unity outside the existing denominations; or will they rally around the more liberal communions There seems to be little doubt that the liberals at the present time are quite comfortable as Episcopalians and as Congregationalists, and not altogether uncomfortable as Baptists and as Methodists, and that there is no other denomination in which they are so uncomfortable as in the Presbyterian Church. It is possible that they may, after a year or more of battle for liberty, be compelled to retire from the existing Presbyterian Church and abandon it to a traditional, unscholarly and fossilized majority and then organize a liberal Presbyterian Church as has been done twice before in this country. But this is not probable at the present time. The liberals will still continue to make themselves as comfortable as possible during the brief period of theological war, until a final struggle may determine their destiny. They will go on in theological investigation they will continue the study of the higher criticism of Holy Scripture; they will seek more light upon the dark problems of the future of the earth and man they will continue to seek God through the Church and the Reason as well as through the Bible they will remain the great constitutional party they will be patient, brave, painstaking and heroic, until the Presbyterian Church becomes as broad, catholic and progressive as her Congregational and Episcopal sisters and then Church Unity will be nigh, at the doors, and a happy end of controversy will be seen in a united Protestantism, which will be then encouraged to seek a higher and grander unity, in which the Roman and Greek communions will likewise share. Civil Government of the United States and South Dakota Classic Reprint

Author: John A. Ross
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 0365384267
Release Date: 2018-03-23
Genre: Reference

Excerpt from Civil Government of the United States and South Dakota Mair, Pastor of the Congregational Church of Mitchell, formerly Superintendent of Schools of Minnehaha County, and to Senator Thomas Sterling, formerly Dean of the School of Law of our State University at Vermillion, each of whom read the manuscript and made valuable suggestions for bringing the work to its present state of completion. Special thanks are due Senator Sterling who has known the author from boyhood and who has taken an unusual interest in the work. Many pages of carefully written criticisms were furnished, cit ing the author to errors of fact, ambiguities, repeti tions, incompleteness of detail, and inaccurate use of technical terms. Except for these criticisms many serious errors would have been overlooked, for there is no other person within the acquaintance of the author who has had that wide experience as lawyer, legislator, practical politician, orator, teacher, member of two constitutional conventions, and literary critic which so completely equips Sen ator Sterling for the task.
