ISBN: 0314282246
Release Date: 2013
Genre: Law

Many law professors aim to probe deep ethical issues in class. But they also need to cover the material that the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination requires. The Rotunda Nutshell fulfils that need as it digests the Model Rules in an engaging, analytical, and often critical way. In a surprisingly pithy manner, this book places the Rules in an historic context that lets the student understand problems with prior versions of the Rules and the Model Code. The Nutshell also analyzes the American Law Institute's Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers, Third. This approach frees up precious class time for important normative issues. And, this Nutshell helps your students come up with better answers to your Socratic questions than you anticipated. This book has proved so popular as an explanation of the basic principles of legal ethics that it has been translated into Japanese.

Professional Responsibility

Author: Ronald D. Rotunda
Publisher:
ISBN: 0314179976
Release Date: 2007
Genre: Legal ethics

This book on legal ethics is the premier text that examines the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, the ABA Code of Judicial Conduct, the American Law Institute's new Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers, and the case law. The book is analytical, concise, and thorough. Empirical studies show that many lawyers are unaware of even basic information about legal ethics, the law governing lawyers. Older lawyers, who draw a disproportionate number of malpractice suits, often have neither formally studied ethics nor kept up with developments in the law. Many malpractice suits arise out of ethics violations, such as disqualification of lawyers for conflicts of interest, multi-disciplinary practice, and the attorney-client evidentiary and ethical privilege. The Ethics Rules are law typically adopted by court rules in the same way that the Rules of Civil Procedure are law. These Ethics Rules are just as complex as the Civil Practice Rules or the Evidence Rules. Many of the Ethics Rules cannot be known through some sort of innate or hereditary awareness automatically infused in ordinary human beings once they are admitted to the bar. Unless a student wants to emulate those lawyers who draw a disproportionate number of malpractice suits, he or she will need to understand the law of Legal Ethics. And to do that, one needs this book.

Racing Through the Dark

Author: David Millar
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 9781451682700
Release Date: 2012-06-26
Genre: Biography & Autobiography

WORLD-CLASS CYCLIST, Tour de France stage winner, and time trial specialist David Millar offers a vivid portrait of his life in professional cycling—including his soul-searing detour into performance-enhancing drugs, his dramatic arrest and two-year ban, and his ultimate decision to return to the sport he loves to race clean—in this arrestingly candid memoir, which he wrote himself. As a young Scottish expat living in Hong Kong with his father after his parents’ divorce, Millar showed early promise with mountain biking and BMX. Two wise local cyclists took him under their wings, encouraging him to concentrate on road racing. Millar proved a ready convert. Racing Through the Dark offers the winning account of his climb through the ranks—first as an amateur and then as a pro, riding for the French team Cofidis. Among his early triumphs were several stage wins in the Tour de France. From the moment Millar turned pro, he began to see hints of the unethical measures that many— maybe most—of the other pros were taking in order to race at the very tops of their games . . . and beyond. At first, he felt that he was immune to temptation, that he could win clean. But the ugly pervasiveness of performance-enhancing drugs and the seemingly universal attitude that condoned it began to corrode his willpower. Racing Through the Dark details his eventual capitulation, his subsequent arrest and two-year ban from cycling, and his remarkable comeback as a clean cyclist who is now doing his utmost to keep performance-enhancing drugs out of the sport he so loves. Filled with thrilling descriptions of the world’s most spectacular courses, Racing Through the Dark captures the pure joy of cycling and includes some of the most vivid accounts of racing ever written by a true insider.
