Chelsea FC, as someone once observed, has always done what other clubs have done, but not necessary in the same order. A stone’s throw from the King’s Road, draped with showbiz connections, and not even based in the borough from which it takes its name, Chelsea is an enigma.Run by the entrepreneurial Mears dynasty, Ken ‘electric fence’ Bates and now the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the club has enough entertaining quirks and anecdotes to keep you entertained for ages. It is also a club whose history is filled with glorious games, unique facts, bizarre statistics, larger-than-life players and a special brand of supporter. And, as this book proves, far from being the imposters Kipling suggested, triumph and disaster make for a fantastically entertaining read.

There are few soccer clubs in the world that attract as much interest in the modern game as Chelsea. Whether it is the latest observations from former coach Jose Mourinho, his successor Antonio Conte, big-money transfer targets, the style of play or results in Europe, everybody thinks they know what's happening--or at least has an opinion on it. The arrival of Russian billionaire tycoon Roman Abramovich as owner turned a glamorous club with a long history of under-achievement into an international powerhouse. After one championship in 99 years, the Blues have, in a dozen years, won four Premier League titles, plus the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, four FA Cups and three Football League Cups. The club always was a magnet for well-known names--vaudeville legend George Robey played for the Pensioners in the club's earliest days--and, in the modern era, Stamford Bridge has become home to a dazzling array of world stars. From Ron "Chopper" Harris and Ken Bates through Ruud Gullit, Roberto Di Matteo and Glenn Hoddle to Mourinho, Costa, John Terry, Diego Costa, David Luiz, and Thibaut Courtois, there is no lack of characters to draw on for quotes.

Chelsea Football Club had only been in existence for nine years when war was declared in 1914, but it already formed a vibrant new part of the community. At home they participated in their first FA Cup Final (dubbed the "Khaki FA Cup Final") in 1915, held recruitment drives at matches, debated over whether the league should continue in a time of war, and proudly published letters sent back to the club from the front. At the onset, 50 soccer balls were sent to fans who were regulars in the forces, or men who had scrambled to enlist. More fans followed them and tried to form companies of Chelsea fans in their battalions. Players joined up and left, most of them for the Footballers Battalion. Exchanging one game for another, they put aside their club differences and fought side by side with men from rival teams.

Kings Road was the place to be in the 1960s, and their residents Chelsea FC were the original fashionable football club. More than forty years after Chelsea conquered Real Madrid in a dramatic European final, Greg Tesser relives the days when he was Britain’s youngest football agent. He will tell of his first meeting with club vice-chairman Richard Attenborough and how Peter Osgood became a TV star, thanks to one of the creators of Coronation Street. It was an era of glamour when soccer and showbiz came together for the first time. When the likes of Michael Crawford and Raquel Welch sat in the antiquated Stamford Bridge stands to marvel at the élan and flair of Charlie Cooke and The King of Stamford Bridge himself, the legendary Peter Osgood – even Steve McQueen got in on the act by visiting the changing-rooms before kick-off. Surely at no other time in the history of football had a squad been assembled that mirrored so accurately the new mood of liberalism that was spreading throughout the country in the 1960s and early 70s. Football, fashion and rock and roll – here’s what it was really at Stamford Bridge in those heady times.

Excerpt: This article documents the History of Chelsea Football Club, an English association football team based in Fulham, West London. For a general overview of the club, see Chelsea F.C. Founded in 1905, Chelsea quickly gained a reputation for signing big name players and for attracting large crowds, but failed to win a major trophy in their first fifty years. They spent thirty of their first forty seasons in the First Division, although often found themselves finishing in mid-table or battling relegation. The closest Chelsea came to success was in the FA Cup; they were runners-up in 1915 and losing semi-finalists in 1911, 1920, 1932, 1950 and 1952. The duck was finally broken by manager Ted Drake, who introduced a series of changes at the club and led Chelsea to the League Championship in 1955. The period 1963-72 saw Chelsea regularly challenge for honours for the first time, although they often narrowly missed out. The League Cup was won in 1965, the FA Cup in 1970 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1971; they were also FA Cup runners-up in 1967 and League Cup runners-up in 1972. Several problems over the next decade, principally the debt burden caused by an ambitious attempt to redevelop Stamford Bridge, brought the club to the brink of extinction, before a revival under...
