Jährlich werden im Schnitt 50.000 neue Marken angemeldet. Die Flopwahrscheinlichkeit dieser schwankt in der Literatur zwischen 80 – 95%. Ein Grund hierfür sind mit einer Vielzahl von Produkten und Produktvariationen gesättigte Märkte. Es kommt zur Reizüberflutung seitens des Käufers, der daraus folgend bei seinen Kaufentscheidungen immer rationaler handelt und dabei auf seine Erfahrungen mit ihm bereits bekannten Marken zurückgreift. Somit wird es für Unternehmen immer schwieriger eine Einzelmarke neu zu positionieren, da sich mit der Einführung hohe Kosten und, wie erwähnt, eine hohe Flopwahrscheinlichkeit verbinden lassen. Die Kosten können marktspezifisch bis zu dreistellige Millionenbeträge erreichen. Trotz der anscheinenden Sättigung der Märkte tendieren Unternehmen dazu, Märkte weiter zu segmentieren und in neue Produktkategorien vorzudringen, um den Gesamtmarkt möglichst breit abzudecken. Ihr Vorteil dabei: Eine oder mehrere Marken, welche in den Köpfen der Konsumenten verankert sind. Auf Grundlage dieser starken Marken ist es Unternehmen potentiell möglich ihr Produktsortiment auf bekannten Märkten oder auf völlig neue Märkte zu erweitern. Die Markenerweiterung, welche in unterschiedlichen Formen durchgeführt werden kann, stellt dabei einen strategischen Ansatz dar, der auf dem Mechanismus des Image- bzw. Markentransfers zurückgreift. Beispielsweise kann es dadurch zu Synergieeffekten im Marketing- Mix kommen, was die Kosten bei einer Neuprodukteinführung deutlich senken würde - um einen Vorteil zu erwähnen. Neben den Vorteilen bzw. Chancen gibt es aber auch Risiken, die nicht unterschätzt werden sollten. Um diese Risiken zu minimieren, ist es Marktforschern in den letzten Jahren gelungen, Erfolgsfaktoren für eine Markenerweiterung zu definieren und diese empirisch zu beweisen.
