Release Date: 2008-01-07
Genre: Mathematics

Respected for its detailed guidance in using technology, CONTEMPORARY PRECALCULUS: A GRAPHING APPROACH, Fifth Edition, is written from the ground up to be used with graphing technology--particularly graphing calculators. The text has also long been recognized for its careful, thorough explanations and its presentation of mathematics in an informal yet mathematically precise manner. The graphing approach is supported by realistic applications, including many using real data and numerous new ones. Thomas W. Hungerford and new coauthor Douglas J. Shaw also include a greater emphasis than many texts on the why? of mathematics--which is addressed in both the exposition and in the exercise sets by focusing on algebraic, graphical, and numerical perspectives. Contemporary College Algebra

Author: Thomas W. Hungerford
Publisher: Brooks/Cole Publishing Company
ISBN: 0534432328
Release Date: 2000-08
Genre: Mathematics

Intended to provide a flexible approach to the college algebra curriculum that emphasizes real-world applications, this text integrates technology into the presentation without making it an end in itself, and is suitable for a variety of audiences. Mathematical concepts are presented in an informal manner that stresses meaningful motivation, careful explanations, and numerous examples, with an ongoing focus on real-world problem solving. Pedagogical elements including chapter opening applications, graphing explorations, technology tips, calculator investigations, and discovery projects are some of the tools students will use to master the material and begin applying the mathematics to solve real-world problems. CONTEMPORARY COLLEGE ALGEBRA includes a full review of basic algebra in Chapter 0. All of the (non-trigonometry) topics needed in calculus are covered here in sufficient detail to prepare a student for a business/social science calculus course. (The companion volume, CONTEMPORARY COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY, (see page XX) includes everything in this book and full coverage of trigonometry to prepare students for the standard science/engineering calculus sequence.) Those who are familiar with the author's Contemporary Precalculus should note that this book covers topics in a different order, and with a slower, gentle approach. Also, more drill exercises are included.

Bold Ventures

Author: Raizen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9789401171113
Release Date: 2012-12-06
Genre: Science

This book presents comprehensive results from case studies of three innovations in mathematics education that have much to offer toward understanding current reforms in this field. Each chapter tells the story of a case in rich detail, with extensive documentation, and in the voices of many of the participants-the innovators, the teachers, the students. Similarly, Volume 2 of Bold Ventures pre sents the results from case studies of five innovations in science education. Volume 1 provides a cross-case analysis of all eight innovations. Many U.S. readers certainly will be very familiar with the name of at least one if not all of the mathematics innovations discussed in this volume-for example, the NCTM Standards-and probably with their general substance. Much of the education community's familiarity with these arises from the pro jects' own dissemination efforts. The research reported in this volume, however, is one of the few detailed studies of these innovations undertaken by researchers outside the projects themselves.

Dwyer and Gruenwald's COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY, SECOND EDITION, is a graphing calculator-dependent text with a contemporary flair. Building upon a traditional table of contents, the authors integrate the best of modern math pedagogy including the rule of four, modeling, and a strong conceptual orientation. The authors motivate students with fresh, current applications that address important topical issues, as well as entertaining and illustrative ones. These applications are woven around a carefully paced presentation of algebra and trigonometry topics. A rich variety of exercises further engage and challenge students. Generic graphing calculator instruction is provided in the text while guidelines and keystrokes for specific calculators can be found in the text-specific manual.

Bold Ventures Volume 1

Author: Raizen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9789401154406
Release Date: 2012-12-06
Genre: Science

This book, based on detailed studies of eight innovations in mathematics and science education, has many insights to offer on current school reform. Since each innovation studied has taken its own unique approach, the set as a whole spans the spectrum from curriculum development to systemic reform, from con centrating on particular school populations to addressing all of K-12 education. Yet these reform projects share a common context, a world view on what mat ters in science and mathematics for students of the 1990s and beyond, convic tions about what constitutes effective instruction, and some notions about how school change can be brought about. These commonalities are drawn out in the book and illustrated with examples from the individual case studies that are reported in full in Bold Ventures, Volumes 2 and 3. The eight innovations-all of them projects that are well-known, at least by name, to U. S. audiences-are briefly described in chapter 1. Each was the sub ject of an in-depth, three-year case study. The research teams analyzed many documents, attended numerous project meetings, visited multiple sites, conduct ed dozens of individual interviews. The team leaders, having spent much time with mathematics or science education over long careers, looked at these reform projects through several lenses; the teams sifted through the mountains of data they had collected in order to tell the story of each project in rich detail.
