Deep Travel

Release Date: 2009-04-01
Genre: Travel

In the hot summer of 2004, David Leff floated away from the routine of daily life just as Henry David Thoreau and his brother had done in their own small boat in 1839. Fortified with Thoreau’s observations as revealed in A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, Leff brought his own concept of mindful deep travel to these same New England waterways. His first-person narrative uses his ecological way of looking, of going deep rather than far, to show that our outward journeys are inseparable from our inward ones. How we see depends on where we are in our lives and with whom we travel. Leff chose his companions wisely. In consecutive journeys his neighbor and friend Alan, a veteran city planner; his son Josh, an energetic eleven-year-old; and his sweetheart Pamela, a compassionate professional caregiver, added their perspectives to Leff’s own experiences as a government official in natural resources policy. Not so much sight seeing as sight seeking, together they explored a geography of the imagination as well as the rich natural and human histories of the rivers and their communities. The heightened awareness of deep travel demands that we immerse ourselves fully in places and realize that they exist in time as well as space. Its mindfulness enriches the experience and makes the voyager worthy of the journey. Leff’s intriguing, contemplative deep travel along these historic rivers presents a methodology for exploration that will enrich any trip.

In Motion

Author: Tony Hiss
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9781351177443
Release Date: 2017-10-18
Genre: Architecture

In this extraordinarily wide-ranging, insightful, and revelatory book, Tony Hiss is the much-praised author of The Experience of Places delves into a unique and instantly recognizable (though previously undescribed) experience that can happen to us when we travel, a special understanding and ability that can leave us feeling exhilarated. He illustrates how throughout human history - from our ancestors walking upright for the first time to astronauts walking on the moon - we have repeatedly availed ourselves of this seemingly elusive quality, which he calls 'Deep Travel.' The sensation of Deep Travel can overtake us, Hiss says, whenever we tap into a sophisticated, wide-awake awareness we all possess. With a wealth of examples - from evocative accounts of his own journeys to celebrated travel writing across the centuries - Hiss identifies and rescues this powerful capacity and sets out simple techniques for accessing it no matter where we are. And this is only a jumping-off point for an original and penetrating explanation of how Deep Travel radically alters our perception of not only where we are but also when we are, by placing us in an 'extended present,' and how it acts as an open-sesame to enlarge and enrich the world around us. Going even further, he investigates how we can remain absolutely still but travel in time itself, as our horizons move backward to include layers of nature and human culture that have gone before, or project us forward to consider what our actions will mean to those who will inhabit our spot on earth a few generations from now. Whether travel takes you around the corner or around the world, once you've read In Motion, no journey will ever feel the same.

Deep seismiC sounding was proposed by G. A. Gamburtsev and developed under his guid ance during the period 1948-1955 at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. During that period also, the first geophysical results concerning the deep structure of the earth's crust in several regions in Tien-Shan, the Pamir, and Turkmenia were observed. Beginning with 1956, the deep seismic sounding method has been used widely by geo physical research groups as well as by geophysical service organizations for regional studies in the USSR. Descriptions of this work have been given in reports by Yu. N. Godin, V. V. Fedynskii, D. N. Kazanli, and others. New variants of the deep seismic sounding method have been developed; continuous profiling (Yu. N. Godin, and others), and point soundings (N. N. Puzyrev, and others). Deep seismic soundings have been carried on outside of Russia also, and studies have been carried out on the use of the deep seismic sounding method in marine applications (E. I. Gal'perin, S. M. Zverev, 1. P. Kosminskaya, Yu. P. Neprochnov, and others). OVer the past decade, the deep seismic sounding method has joined the suite of geo physical studies as a highly detailed method for studying the earth's crust and upper mantle to depths of 50 to 100 km on land, and of 15 to 25 km in the deep oceans.

When you are planning a vacation, having all of the important facts in hand well in advance will help to ensure that your trip will be as pleasant and problem-free as possible. For American travellers who plan to vacation on Mauritius, one important factor that will be handy to know about in advance is that the metric system is used for weights and measurements on the island. As this is something which many Americans are not overly familiar with, it would be a good idea to either brush up on skills or carry a metric converter, such as a small booklet which contains this information. It may seem like a very minor issue, but when you are on your trip you will see how frequently it will come in handy for everything from asking the distance in directions to purchasing food items while shopping.

Publisher: Wesleyan University Press
ISBN: 9780819572820
Release Date: 2012-06-21
Genre: Travel

In the course of the mundane routines of life, we encounter a variety of landscapes and objects, either ignoring them or looking without interest at what appears to be just a tree, stone, anonymous building, or dirt road. But the “deep traveler,” according to Hartford Courant essayist David K. Leff, doesn’t make this mistake. Instead, the commonplace elements become the most important. By learning to see the magic in the mundane, we not only enrich daily life with a sense of place, we are more likely to protect and make those places better. Over his many years working at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and writing about the state’s landscape, Leff gained unparalleled intimacy while traveling its byways and back roads. In Hidden in Plain Sight, Leff’s essays and photographs take us on a point-by-point journey, revealing the rich stories behind many of Connecticut’s overlooked landmarks, from the Merritt Parkway and Cornwall’s Cathedral Pines to roadside rock art and centuries-old milestones.

The enemy is adept at producing corrupt imitations of God's perfect creation and these realms are no exception, but the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord always outweighs the worst destruction of evil. Therefore, we examine both the righteous and unrighteous versions, sharing revelatory insights from the Lord regarding how to escape from the ungodly places and dwell in the righteous width, length, depth and height where we will enjoy the abundant blessings of God.

Deep Space Probes

Author: Gregory L. Matloff
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540273400
Release Date: 2006-08-31
Genre: Technology & Engineering

The Space Age is nearly 50 years old but exploration of the outer planets and beyond has only just begun. Deep-Space Probes Second Edition draws on the latest research to explain why we should explore beyond the edge of the Solar System and how we can build highly sophisticated robot spacecraft to make the journey. Many technical problems remain to be solved, among them propulsion systems to permit far higher velocities, and technologies to build vehicles a fraction of the size of today’s spacecraft. Beyond the range of effective radio control, robot vehicles for exploring deep space will need to be intelligent, ‘thinking’ craft – able to make vital decisions entirely on their own. Gregory Matloff also looks at the possibility for human travel into interstellar space, and some of the immense problems that such journeys would entail. This second edition includes an entirely new chapter on holographic message plaques for future interstellar probes – a NASA-funded project.
