A Collection of Selected Words from the Bah Writings in Persian Arabic and English

Author: Hamed Eshraghian
Publisher: Hamed Eshraghian
Release Date: 1989
Genre: Bahai Faith

This Collection of Selected Words contains more than 2,200 significant and commonly used Persian/Arabic words and phrases, with their corresponding English translation, that appear in the Baha'i Writings. The English translation of the Persian/Arabic word or phrase has been found by matching the words in the original Persian/ Arabic text with the same word or phrase in the published English translation of that same text. This method differs from consulting Persian to English or Arabic to English dictionaries to find the English equivalent of a Persian or Arabic word, taking advantage of the translator's research and insight in selecting the most appropriate translation for a particular context and meaning. In cases where the selected work has been translated by Shoghi Effendi, this method also enables us to follow the standard set by the beloved Guardian in his translations of those works. Furthermore, this method enables one to find the translation of complete phrases not normally found in dictionaries; therefore, every attempt has been made to include such phrases and special terms in this collection. Although a relatively small number of texts has been used in preparing this collection, it is hoped that it will be useful in the general study of the Baha'i Writings in both Persian/Arabic and English.

Publisher: Al Manhal
ISBN: 9796500125657
Release Date: 2014-01-01
Genre: Foreign Language Study

This book is designed for all English/Arab students whose major is translation. The aim is to introduce students to English translation through their comprehension of the Arabic syntax, therefore, help them to understand how to think and translate into English. No theoretical concepts in translation studies are discussed here, the reason is to give way to practice because it is through practice that students learn best how to translate any text and not just through theories which are in abundance. But when it comes to applying them, they fail to assist students and professionals to learn properly the skill of a good translator, and cannot be implemented fully as tool to produce a cohesive and coherent target text that can be acceptable by the reader and fully informative and contextually correct in its situationality. That is with no translation loss semantically and with the same meaning and effect as the source text – though the ST might sound sometimes incomprehensible in the first instance to the translator.

ISBN: 9789047423775
Release Date: 2010-11-19
Genre: Reference

The Qur'an is the living source of all Islamic teaching, and is of singular importance to those interested in Islam and the study of religions. Despite this, there exists a long-felt lack of research tools for English first-language speakers who wish to access the Qur'an in the original Arabic. The Dictionary of Qur'anic Usage is the first comprehensive, fully-researched and contextualised Arabic-English dictionary of Qur'anic usage, compiled in accordance with modern lexicographical methods by scholars who have a lifelong immersion in Qur'anic Studies. Based on Classical Arabic dictionaries and Qur'an commentaries, this work also emphasises the role of context in determining the meaning-scatter of each vocabulary item. Illustrative examples from Qur'anic verses are provided in support of the definitions given for each context in which a particular word occurs, with cross-references to other usages. Frequently occurring grammatical particles are likewise thoroughly explained, insofar as they are used in conveying various nuances of meaning in the text.
