People Knitting

Author: Barbara Levine
Publisher: Chronicle Books
ISBN: 9781616895402
Release Date: 2016-10-04
Genre: Photography

People Knitting is a charming tribute in vintage photographs and printed ephemera to the ever-popular, often all-consuming, craft of knitting. When women posed with their knitting in the earliest nineteenth-century photographs, it demonstrated their virtue and skill as homemakers. Later, knitting became fashionable among the wealthy as a sign of culture and artistic ability. During the two world wars, images of nurses, soldiers, prisoners, and even knitting clubs composed of very serious small boys—all with heads bent down, intent on knitting items (especially socks) for the troops—abounded. In the 1950s and 1960s, as snapshots became ubiquitous, knitters took on a jauntier air, posing with handiwork held proudly aloft. People Knitting is a quirky and fascinating gift for the knitter in your life.

ISBN: 3791383078
Release Date: 2017-04-25

Featuring photographs that have been banned from Instagram, this generously illustrated book explores modern censorship. Instagram's user guidelines prohibit posting "violent, nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic, or sexually suggestive photos." Unsurprisingly, these policies have been a source of tension and debate for many creatives who use the social media platform as a means of self-expression. Having received many takedown notices themselves, artists Arvida Byström and Molly Soda put out an open call asking avid Instagrammers to submit their own censored images. The result is this collection of pictures from well-known and emerging IG users including Petra Collins, Rupi Kaur, Amalia Ulman, Lina Scheynius, Harley Weir, and dozens more. The book features a wide range of subject matter, from body image and sexual relationships to menstruation and nude selfies. Pushing the boundaries of social media guidelines and social mores, this book reveals a fascinating picture of 21st century society's complex views on the image of the human body and censorship.

Irving Klaw was the legendary New York-based mail order merchant who, between around 1949 and his eventual prosecution for obscenity in 1966, produced thousands of films, photographic sets and printed booklets based on themes of fetishism, bondage, and sado-masochism. Although best-known for his discovery and promotion of the iconic bondage model Betty Page, Klaw's greatest legacy undoubtedly lies in his pioneering publishing work in the field of bondage illustration.Klaw's earliest bondage art series - which he published as photographs in sets of episodes - were mostly themed around images of girls fighting. But Klaw's activities soon attracted other artists, such as Eric Stanton and Gene Bilbrew ("Eneg"), who offered work more firmly based on bondage, restraint, and cruelty. The popularity of this type of art was quickly established, and Klaw went on to produce dozens of sets by a whole range of like-minded artists throughout the 1950s.PSYCHO GIRLS IN BONDAGE is a new anthology which collects some of the most outstanding examples of bondage art and fiction originally published by Klaw. The featured artists are Stanton, Eneg, Jim, Ruiz, and Dixon, all stalwarts of Klaw's bondage-art catalogue. The book includes over 200 images.Klaw Klassix is a new illustrated book series of classic "non-nude" erotic art and fiction, dedicated to preserving and presenting the very best works originally published by Irving Klaw.
