The ADG held its first International Symposium at Churchill College, Cambridge, in July 1979. The second symposium was also held at Churchill College on 30-31 July, 1981, and this, the third, took place at the same college on 30-31 July,. 1983. The meeting was structured in a format which we hoped would appeal to the full range of our membership. The philosophy of the ADG is that medical microbiologists, veterinarians, toxicologists and dental bacteriologists have much to learn from each other and can best be achieved by bringing these various disciplines together frequently and in informal surroundings. Again the symposium was very generously sponsored by May and Baker Limited who met all costs of the meeting and entertained us splendidly. David Jackson and Donald Bedford were re sponsible for coordinating with the ADG on behalf of May and Baker and, as usual, gave us their full cooperation. This book contains the full-length papers, followed by the posters presented at the meeting. This book also serves as a vehicle for the abstracts of the first meeting of the Society for Intestinal Microbial Ecology and Disease, SIMED, held in Boston, Massachusetts. An introduction to this new society by its President, Sydney M. Finegold, M.D., precedes the abstracts. M.J. The two volumes of Acute Phase Proteins book consist of chapters that give a large panel of fundamental and applied knowledge on one of the major elements of the inflammatory process during the acute phase response, i.e., the acute phase proteins expression and functions that regulate homeostasis. We have organized this book in two volumes - the first volume, mainly containing chapters on structure, biology and functions of APP, the second volume discussing different uses of APP as diagnostic tools in human and veterinary medicine.

Mycoplasma Diseases of Ruminants

Author: Roger Ayling
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 9780851990125
Release Date: 2008
Genre: Medical

Mycoplasmas cause some of the most serious and economically significant diseases in livestock and pose major problems for animal health authorities worldwide. Infection has spread in the last five years to new regions and species, but little effective control is available, particularly in developing countries. This work encapsulates the latest research and development on mycoplasmas in sheep, goats and cattle from laboratories all over the world, describing both conventional diagnostic techniques for growth and identification and newly established procedures such as PCR/DGGE. Molecular typing methods are also covered, specifically for use in mycoplasma fingerprinting as well as up to date reviews on the major mycoplasma diseases including contagious bovine and caprine pleuropneumonias, contagious agalactia and many conditions caused by Mycoplasma bovis.

Within the last ten years, the interest of historians and philosophers of science in the epistemological writings of the Polish medical microbiologist Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961), who had up to then been almost completely unknown, has advanced with great strides. His main writings on epistemological questions were published in the mid-1930's, but they remained almost unnoticed. Today, however, one may rightly call Fleck a 'classical' figure both of episte mology and of the historical sociology of science, one whose works are comparable with Popper's Logic of Scientific Discovery or Merton's pioneer ing study of the relations among economics, Puritanism, and natural science, both also originally published in the mid-1930's. The story of this book of 'materials on Ludwik Fleck' is also the story of the reception of Ludwik Fleck. In this volume, some essential materials which have been produced by that reception have been gathered together. We will sketch both the reception and the materials.

Proceedings of the Xth International Scientific Congress in Fur Animal Production

These proceedings present the latest achievements and developments within the scientific community of fur animal research organised by the International Fur Animal Scientific Association (IFASA). The book contains papers on the following topics: nutrition, feeding and management, health and disease, breeding, genetics and reproduction, behaviour and welfare and a theme on 'WelFur for mink and foxes'. The scientific results presented do not only come from traditional mink producing countries, but also from countries with more recent developments in fur animal production. The scientific community in the field of fur animal production is small, but the biologic diversity and thus the need for scientifically based knowledge in this area is similar to, or often exceeds, that of other farm animals. In this book, the most diverse and recent advancements in fur animal production were brought together in order to provide a clear overview for all those involved in the fur animal industry.
