The purpose of this descriptive case study was to examine the effects of using Number Talks in order to increase student number sense and overall mathematics achievement in a fourth grade classroom. The sample included 56 students from two fourth grade classroom. The sample included 56 students from two fourth grade classrooms at Peralta Elementary School, in the Jurupa Unified School District. For nine weeks in the second trimester, an experimental group participated in a Number Talk at least three days a week in addition to their regular mathematics instruction. The control group in this study only received their regular mathematics instruction. Both groups participated in a mathematical survey and were given an initial baseline assessment, weekly progress monitoring assessments and a final baseline assessment at the conclusion of the study. After completing the research study, comparison data showed that Number Talks was an instrumental tool that helped to increase number sense and overall mathematical achievement in the experimental group.
