Singularities

Genre: Mathematics

In July 1996, a conference was organized by the editors of this volume at the Mathematische Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach to honour Egbert Brieskorn on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Most of the mathematicians invited to the conference have been influenced in one way or another by Brieskorn's work in singularity theory. It was the first time that so many people from the Russian school could be present at a conference in singularity theory outside Russia. This volume contains papers on singularity theory and its applications, written by participants of the conference. In many cases, they are extended versions of the talks presented there. The diversity of subjects of the contributions reflects singularity theory's relevance to topology, analysis and geometry, combining ideas and techniques from all of these fields, as well as demonstrating the breadth of Brieskorn's own interests. Singularities and Computer Algebra

Author: Wolfram Decker
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783319288291
Release Date: 2017-04-03
Genre: Mathematics

This book arose from a conference on “Singularities and Computer Algebra” which was held at the Pfalz-Akademie Lambrecht in June 2015 in honor of Gert-Martin Greuel’s 70th birthday. This unique volume presents a collection of recent original research by some of the leading figures in singularity theory on a broad range of topics including topological and algebraic aspects, classification problems, deformation theory and resolution of singularities. At the same time, the articles highlight a variety of techniques, ranging from theoretical methods to practical tools from computer algebra.Greuel himself made major contributions to the development of both singularity theory and computer algebra. With Gerhard Pfister and Hans Schönemann, he developed the computer algebra system SINGULAR, which has since become the computational tool of choice for many singularity theorists. The book addresses researchers whose work involves singularity theory and computer algebra from the PhD to expert level.

Applied Picard Lefschetz Theory

Author: V. A. Vasilʹev
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 9780821829486
Release Date: 2002
Genre: Mathematics

Many important functions of mathematical physics are defined as integrals depending on parameters. The Picard-Lefschetz theory studies how analytic and qualitative properties of such integrals (regularity, algebraicity, ramification, singular points, etc.) depend on the monodromy of corresponding integration cycles. In this book, V. A. Vassiliev presents several versions of the Picard-Lefschetz theory, including the classical local monodromy theory of singularities and complete intersections, Pham's generalized Picard-Lefschetz formulas, stratified Picard-Lefschetz theory, and also twisted versions of all these theories with applications to integrals of multivalued forms. The author also shows how these versions of the Picard-Lefschetz theory are used in studying a variety of problems arising in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. In particular, he discusses the following classes of functions: volume functions arising in the Archimedes-Newton problem of integrable bodies; Newton-Coulomb potentials; fundamental solutions of hyperbolic partial differential equations; and, multidimensional hypergeometric functions generalizing the classical Gauss hypergeometric integral. The book is geared toward a broad audience of graduate students, research mathematicians and mathematical physicists interested in algebraic geometry, complex analysis, singularity theory, asymptotic methods, potential theory, and hyperbolic operators.

Automated Deduction in Geometry

Author: Franz Winkler
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783540246169
Release Date: 2004-05-06
Genre: Mathematics

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Automated Deduction in Geometry, ADG 2002, held at Hagenberg Castle, Austria in September 2002. The 13 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. Among the issues addressed are theoretical and methodological topics, such as the resolution of singularities, algebraic geometry and computer algebra; various geometric theorem proving systems are explored; and applications of automated deduction in geometry are demonstrated in fields like computer-aided design and robotics.

Bifurcation of Planar Vector Fields and Hilbert s Sixteenth Problem

Author: Robert H. Roussarie
Publisher: Birkhauser
ISBN: UOM:39015043248817
Release Date: 1998
Genre: Mathematics

In a coherent, exhaustive and progressive way, this book presents the tools for studying local bifurcations of limit cycles in families of planar vector fields. A systematic introduction is given to such methods as division of an analytic family of functions in its ideal of coefficients, and asymptotic expansion of non-differentiable return maps and desingularisation. The exposition moves from classical analytic geometric methods applied to regular limit periodic sets to more recent tools for singular limit sets. The methods can be applied to theoretical problems such as Hilbert's 16th problem, but also for the purpose of establishing bifurcation diagrams of specific families as well as explicit computations.
