The present novel is a combination of drawings, pithy turns of phrase, candour, tragedy, despair and hope and as a result the novel is more than an interesting and engaging story; it keeps the reader entertained until the very end.The parents and educators have been particularly critical of this novel because it includes several controversial subjects such as homosexuality, masturbation, violence, and alcohol. There is no doubt that there is enough profanity in the lines of the novel. Although the controversy is still there and several schools have still kept the book banned from their curricula and their libraries, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" is considered as one of the most popular and great work by the author.

The Diary of a Vanishing Indian

Author: Valerie Alexandra Cato
Publisher:

Release Date: 2013
Genre: American literature

Author's Abstract: This thesis provides an overview of the current ongoing debates regarding Indian autobiographies and their relevance to Sherman Alexie's Young Adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The introduction and subsequent chapters provide a background on Indian autobiographies and present a critical reading of Alexie's text, arguing that, just as Indian autobiographies address the stereotype of the vanishing Indian, Alexie's Absolutely True Diary deals with the theme of the vanishing Indian. Over the course of the novel, the reader witnesses the increasing loss of Arnold's activism in his Indian culture. The thesis also discusses the bicultural aspect present in Indian autobiographies. This factor has led autobiographical scholars to consider these works abject due to the fact that they cannot be seriously considered as authentically Indian life stories. Likewise, Arnold's collaboration with whites at Reardan calls into question how Indian Arnold's autobiography is at the conclusion of his diary. This thesis argues that Arnold's finished diary indicates that Arnold's thinking about Indians remains consistent with the manner in which whites regard Indians. As a result, the pattern of the vanishing Indian seen in Indian autobiographies is evident in Alexie's novel as illustrated by Arnold's assimilation into white society.

Genre: Fiction

Finely-honed portraits of hope and change, these two novellas are linked so skillfully that they achieve the intensity of a single novel in which some characters succeed and others fail on separate but equally compelling quests. In "The Fires," Gina Morgan makes a pilgrimage to Uzbekistan to carry out her husband's final wish—to be cremated—only to find herself entirely at sea in the strange new reality of the former Soviet republic, while in "The Exorcism," Tom Swanson begins to make sense of his life when he retrieves his angry daughter from her exclusive New England college after her expulsion for setting fire to a grand piano.
