Simon Frith has been one of the most important figures in the emergence and subsequent development of popular music studies. From his earliest academic publication, The Sociology of Rock (1978), through to his recent work on the live music industry in the UK, in his desire to ’take popular music seriously’ he has probably been cited more than any other author in the field. Uniquely, he has combined this work with a lengthy career as a music critic for leading publications on both sides of the Atlantic. The contributions to this volume of essays and memoirs seek to honour Frith’s achievements, but they are not merely ’about Frith’. Rather, they are important interventions by leading scholars in the field, including Robert Christgau, Antoine Hennion, Peter J. Martin and Philip Tagg. The focus on ’sociology and industry’ and ’aesthetics and values’ reflect major themes in Frith’s own work, which can also be found within popular music studies more generally. As such the volume will become an essential resource for those working in popular music studies, as well as in musicology, sociology and cultural and media studies.

This interdisciplinary volume enters the scholarly conversation about Bruce Springsteen at the moment when he has reinforced his status of global superstar and achieved the status of social critic. Covering musical and cultural developments, chapters primarily consider work Springsteen has released since 9/11—that is, released during a period of continued global unrest, economic upheaval, and social change—under the headings Politics, Fear and Society; Gender and Sexual Identity; and Toward a Rhetoric of Springsteen. The collection engages Springsteen and popular music as his contemporary work is just beginning to be understood in terms of its impact on popular culture and music, applying new areas of inquiry to Springsteen and putting Springsteen fan writing within the same binding as academic writing to show how together they create a more nuanced understanding of an artist. Established and emerging Springsteen scholars approach work from disciplines including rhetoric and composition, historical musicology, labor studies, American history, literature, communications, sociology, theology, and government. Offering context, critique, and expansive understanding of Springsteen and his work, this book contributes to Springsteen scholarship and the study of popular music by showing Springsteen’s broadening academic appeal as well as his escalating legacy on new musicians, social consciousness, and contemporary culture.

Metaphor of Emotion in Nick Cave s Song Lyrics

Author: Eva Legović
Publisher:
ISBN: OCLC:1080390896
Release Date: 2018
Genre:

The main topic of this paper is the conceptual metaphor of emotion found in the lyrics by the Australian singer and poet Nick Cave. The paper focuses on the theory of conceptual metaphor and its power to convey abstract concepts and subjective experiences like emotions. Through Lakoff's conceptual mapping explained in detail, it is shown how metaphor is actually the main cognitive process by which we understand abstract concepts in terms of other, more concrete concepts. The second part deals with emotions: how they are extremely subjective experiences and cannot be expressed using literal language, but can be communicated through metaphor. The analysis of the theoretical part is done on the lyrics by Nick Cave. First, it is explained why his lyrics can be treated as poetry. Then, based on Lakoff and Turner's analysis of poetic metaphor, it is explained how poets use metaphor at all, which is then analysed on examples from Cave's lyrics. Finally, there is a list and an analysis of emotion metaphors found in Cave's lyrics from 1978 - 2013.
