The Little Wonder

Author: Robert Winder
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 9781408192245
Release Date: 2013-04-11
Genre: History

John Wisden, at his peak known as 'The Little Wonder', was a key member of the England cricket team who in 1859 sailed across the Atlantic on the world's first overseas cricket tour. In 1864, after his retirement, Wisden published the first edition of the book that would make his name immortal. He printed 'full and accurate scores' along with indispensable facts about the Derby, the St Leger, the university rowing matches 'and other Interesting Information', including potted histories of the Wars of the Roses. The 1864 edition is now valued at anything up to £25,000, and Wisden Cricketers' Almanack has been published continuously ever since ? not for nothing is it known as 'the cricketer's bible'. The Almanack has, despite some close shaves, never missed a year. In 1937 it was just 48 hours from liquidation, and in the Second World War a German bomber set fire to the company's headquarters, destroying its records. And yet somehow, the yellow (since 1938) book has retained its antique, rugged character. It is a labour-of-love collection of records for cricket obsessives, but also a hearty eccentric. It loves to count the number of wides in a season, but also delights in relating tales from far-flung pavilions. Through the telling of Wisden's story, we also glimpse the history of English, and world, cricket. The book is a window onto the game's most charismatic characters, its high points, lows and political storms. In The Little Wonder Robert Winder traces the central role the game has played in national life for so long. The book's 150th anniversary in 2013 is the ideal time to tell the extraordinary story of Wisden's ? and cricket's ? journey from Victorian times to the modern world. New every year, it feels as though it has been with us for ever.

Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from playing in 2014, is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest cricketers of all time ? and arguably the greatest batsman ever. From the time Tendulkar made an appearance as a schoolboy cricketer in the 1989 Wisden Cricketers' Almanack to his retirement in 2014, Wisden on Tendulkar records the highlights of an exceptional career ? handpicked from all Wisden publications over a quarter of a century and curated for a global audience, with special appeal to an Indian readership. Wisden on Tendulkar includes reports from his first Test in Pakistan as a 16-year-old ? where a Waqar Younis bouncer had him bleeding ? to his final Test at home, when a country wept as it said goodbye to its most celebrated sporting icon. The most prolific run-getter of all time, the most diverse Test and one-day batsman, the world's most eminent cricketing hero, Tendulkar has many records to his name. His place in cricketing history is especially significant ? not just for all the records he broke or comparisons with Don Bradman, but for what Tendulkar meant to a young nation finding its voice in a globalised world. Wisden on Tendulkar includes: - Cricketer of the Year feature (1997) - Batting for a Billion article (2003) - The Long Farewell piece (2014) - The ebbs and flows of Tendulkar's 24-year-long career - Scorecards of his most significant Test and ODI matches - Colour plate section - Detailed list of records

Wisden on the Great War

Author: Andrew Renshaw
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 9781408832363
Release Date: 2014-05-08
Genre: Sports & Recreation

Readers of the 1917 Wisden Cricketers' Almanack were advised by the editor, Sydney Pardon: "Its chief feature is a record of the cricketers who have fallen in the War – the Roll of Honour, so far as the national game is concerned.†? By the time the conflict was over, Wisden had carried almost 1,800 obituaries. Test players like Colin Blythe were far outnumbered by men with a lesser claim to fame, as schoolboy cricketers were sent out to the battlefields fresh from their playing fields. Amid the carnage and confusion, errors inevitably crept in: names were wrong and there were cases of mistaken identity. Some mistakes have lain buried in Wisden's pages for a century: as this book discloses, three men outlived their obituary by many years. All the obituaries have been updated in Wisden on the Great War with new information about the subjects' lives and deaths, their families and memorials, and ordered by the year of death. There is a listing of the 289 men who had played first-class cricket, while the 89 who did not get an obituary in Wisden are now recognised. The book also lists for the first time the 407 first-class cricketers who were decorated for gallantry, of whom 381 survived. Among the men included is an officer who as a boy was an inspiration for J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, and one whose agonising death on the battlefield is movingly described in Robert Graves' Goodbye to All That. These men now receive proper tribute, along with literary names that are already well-known, such as Rupert Brooke, who headed his school's bowling averages in 1906 and received an obituary in Wisden that mentioned that, at the time of his death, he 'had gained considerable reputation as a poet'. The wartime Wisdens have long been cherished by families whose relatives are commemorated in them, but the originals are scarce and command a high price. Now the lives of the men are properly celebrated, enhanced by many remarkable stories of courage and coincidence. The result is a poignant insight into the cohorts of cricketers who played the ultimate game for their country.

Ich denke also spiele ich

Author: Andrea Pirlo
Publisher: Riva Verlag
ISBN: 9783864137266
Release Date: 2015-03-09
Genre: Biography & Autobiography
