Author: Association of Alternative Newsweeklies
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 9780810127371
Release Date: 2011-03-29

Alternative newsweeklies have long covered the most provocative stories with some of the country's sharpest writing and reporting. And with the decline of the mainstream media, alternative weeklies now serve as a bulwark against the disappearance of local print coverage. Best AltWeekly Writing 2009 & 2010, edited by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN), showcases articles that won the AAN's AltWeekly Awards in 2009 and 2010. These pieces embody the in-depth investigative journalism, narrative style, and defiant viewpoints that have made alternative newsweeklies an essential part of our media landscape. Included are music criticism from the Village Voice and election coverage from City Pages and the Texas Observer, as well as news and features from Westword, Washington City Paper, the Arkansas Times, Folio Weekly, and LEO Weekly. Pieces are accompanied by interviews with the reporters who wrote them, giving an insider's look at the story behind the story.

How Ottawa Spends 2009 2010

Author: Allan M. Maslove
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 9780773536128
Release Date: 2009
Genre: Business & Economics

Early Harper budgets delivered lower taxes for all Canadians partly through highly targeted but politically noticeable small tax breaks on textbooks for students, tools for apprentices in skilled trades, and public transit costs. The needs of the beleaguered average Canadian and the "swing voter in the swing constituencies" of an already strategized "next" election were a key part of Conservative agenda-setting. In the 2007 budget alone there were twenty-nine separate tax reductions and federal spending was projected to increase by $10 billion, including a 5.7 percent increase in program spending. A small surplus of $3.3 billion was planned, almost all of which would go to debt reduction. As Harper savoured his 14 October 2008 re-election with a strengthened minority government, although without his desired majority, he and his minister of Finance already knew that his surpluses were likely gone in the face of the crashing financial sector and a looming recession. Future deficits were firmly back on the agenda. Contributors include Malcolm G. Bird (Carleton University), Chris Brown (Carleton University), G. Bruce Doern (Carleton University and University of Exeter), Melissa Haussman (Carleton University), Robert Hilton (Carleton University), Ruth Hubbard (University of Ottawa), Edward T. Jackson (Carleton University), Kirsten Kozolanka (Carleton University), Evert Lindquist (University of Victoria), Allan M. Release Date: 2011-01-02

The doctrine of moral rights is based on the idea that authors have a special bond with their own creative work. At present, the legal status of moral rights demands clarification and assessment as never before, particularly as the international expansion of moral rights occurs in the new environment of digital technology. Just as the survival of copyright law depends on its capacity to adapt effectively to the new technological environment, a new approach to moral rights is imperative. Moral Rights: Principles, Practice and New Technology is the first work to comprehensively address the role and challenges of moral rights in an environment of digital technology The problem is addressed from both practical and theoretical channels, and examples drawn from the legislation and practice of key jurisdictions around the world. The book concludes with a consideration of how the concept of moral rights can contribute to the re-organization of copyright law in a digital context.
