If you had to make a life-and-death decision right here, right now, could you? Surgeons do that every day, relying on a decision-making process steeped in a network of facts, education, experience, intuition, and gut instincts. But how do they know which quality to tap into and when? Turns out that the same principles that surgeons use to diagnose, decide, do, and ultimately discharge can help anyone make important decisions efficiently and productively. In Trust Your Gut: The Surgeon’s Guide to Getting It Done, Dr. Tom Nicholson, Chief of General Surgery and a colorectal specialist at a Pennsylvania teaching hospital, prescribes twenty solutions that anyone can use to make good decisions in work and in life. Trust Your Gut is a concise motivational business book designed to be read in less than an hour—on the train, waiting for a plane, or anywhere and anytime the reader needs a boost of decision-making confidence. The author, also a business owner, dissects each step of how surgeons make decisions, and translates them for outside the OR, in work and in life
Have you ever wondered if there are effective alternatives to conventional medicine, or if anyone else you trust uses natural medicine? Many people are turning to more natural and holistic remedies and therapies, either because conventional medicine is not working for them or they want to stop putting chemical medications into their bodies. There is a huge amount of scientific research and evidence supporting natural forms of medicine. But sometimes the use of natural remedies is hard to quantify. Sometimes one size doesn't fit all, and we have to trust out own intuition for what our own body or our family members need. The more we educate ourselves about natural alternatives, the more effectively our intuition can direct us to what will help. Inside this book are "25 Natural Medicine Confessions" from women and moms (each with many online followers) who tell their stories about why they choose natural medicine for healing and resolving illnesses. Their knowledge and experience can serve as inspiration for us all to be more empowered in our own home medicine and health care.

Abstract : Approaches to understanding adaptive behaviour often assume that animals have perfect information about environmental conditions or are capable of sophisticated learning. If such learning abilities are costly, however, natural selection will favour simpler mechanisms for controlling behaviour when faced with uncertain conditions. Here, we show that, in a foraging context, a strategy based only on current energy reserves often performs almost as well as a Bayesian learning strategy that integrates all previous experiences to form an optimal estimate of environmental conditions. We find that Bayesian learning gives a strong advantage only if fluctuations in the food supply are very strong and reasonably frequent. The performance of both the Bayesian and the reserve-based strategy are more robust to inaccurate knowledge of the temporal pattern of environmental conditions than a strategy that has perfect knowledge about current conditions. Studies assuming Bayesian learning are often accused of being unrealistic; our results suggest that animals can achieve a similar level of performance to Bayesians using much simpler mechanisms based on their physiological state. More broadly, our work suggests that the ability to use internal states as a source of information about recent environmental conditions will have weakened selection for sophisticated learning and decision-making systems.
Get fast and easy results in your business by improving your intuition. This book not only explains the power of bringing intuition into your business, but it helps you develop your intuitive senses by giving you practical actions you can take to tap into and trust your intuition. If you're ignoring your business intuition, you might find it difficult to make decisions. You might struggle to set goals or to achieve them. You might find yourself making bad decisions that you later regret, kicking yourself because you knew all along, deep down, that it wasn't the right thing to do. When we follow our business intuition, it's like having an inner compass or GPS system that directs our thoughts and actions. It gives us useful bits of advice and it helps us to quickly and easily make decisions by giving us us crystal clarity of mind, which takes the stress out of knowing which path to choose for our business. Our intuition helps us to simply know if an opportunity is good or not, and to easily take decisive action when it is. This book will help you to easily access your business intuition. It gives you practical tips on how to develop your intuition, how to make it easier to hear its messages, how to trust your intuition, and how to use it in your business. It's designed to provide you with the information as quickly and simply as possible, so you can easily learn how to make intuition a bigger part of your business. This book is for you if: * You've ever made a bad business investment, whether it was an expensive business coach/mentor, an online program, or something else. You regret that decision, and you wonder how you could have thought that was the right thing for you at that time. * You've ever had a bad feeling about a new project that your business mentor encouraged you to take on, but went through with it anyway because you believed she must know best, only to have it flop in the end. Afterwards, you were left kicking yourself and wondering what went wrong. * You've ever listened to a business buddy's advice about what you needed to do to grow your business more quickly, even though it didn't seem right, and later regretted your decision. And then you wondered, if it worked for her, why didn't it work for you? * You've ever felt stuck and frustrated because you had absolutely no idea what to do in a particular situation, and then ended up making the wrong decision. It made you feel even more frustrated, because you spent time carefully considering the pros and cons of each option, and even then it didn't work out in your favor. * You've ever had a great idea for something, but then your head got in the way, and you now regret never taking action on it. Intuition is like a flashlight that shows us the next step or steps on our path toward our business goals. It gives us the confidence to take the next step and start walking down the path, even when we can't see the entire journey from here to our goals. When Iyou don't follow my intuition, you may feel like you're fumbling around in the dark. When you do follow it, you'll be confident in the actions that you take. In this book, you will learn: * Why it's so important for entrepreneurs to pay attention to their intuition * Why listening to your intuition can make business so much easier * What your business could look like if you listened to your intuition * How to develop your business intuition * Ways to make it easier for you to trust your intuition * How to use intuition in your business

A holistic health counselor and co-star of the award-winning documentary Super Size Me explores women’s cravings—for food, sleep, sex, movement, companionship, inspiration—and teaches them to listen to their bodies for a healthier, fuller life. “Desire is the basis for new conception, new growth, new life. We’re born with it. And often talked out of it. When you tap it, you have access to your inner guidance. Women, Food, and Desire will show you how. Sweet.” (Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of New York Times bestsellers Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom Of Menopause) Transformational health expert Alexandra Jamieson is a woman on a mission. Having overcome her own food addictions and the weight and health problems these habits caused, she learned something life-altering: when we listen to our cravings, they will lead us onto the path of deep healing. Since her own personal breakthrough more than a decade ago, Alexandra has dedicated her life to helping other women learn to listen to the wisdom of their cravings and make food their greatest ally as they step into their lives with authentic passion. With love, deep compassion, and fearless honesty, she calls upon all of us to boldly use food as a tool to cleanse ourselves of the nutritional, emotional, physical, and mental blocks that limit our ability to live full, meaningful, and joyful lives. In this book she’ll show us how our cravings are the gatekeepers of our deepest longings and desires; how transforming habits set us free; and how detoxing unclutters our bodies and minds so we may engage in our lives with more power and authenticity. She also helps us embrace our sexual selves, trust our instincts, and form a nurturing community that is essential for a vital, healthy, hot life.

When a parent singles out a child for special privileges and attention, that child is often unaware that the relationship is unhealthy—even incestuous. As adults, these children struggle to feel validated, because while they have not been directly abused, they feel a sense of violation and crossed boundaries—usually done in the name of 'love' and 'caring.' The parent's love feels more confining than freeing, more demanding than giving, more intrusive than nurturing. Yet these children suffer from what psychologist Kenneth Adams calls The Silent Seduction—because there is nothing loving or caring about a close parent-child relationship that services the needs of the parent rather than the child. In this revised and updated 20th anniversary edition of his groundbreaking book Silently Seduced, Dr. Adams explains how 'feeling close,' especially with the opposite-sex parent, is not the source of comfort the image suggests, especially when that child is cheated out of a childhood by being a parent's surrogate partner. He offers a framework to understand this covert incest and its effect on sexuality, intimacy, and relationships, and how victims can begin the process of recovery.
